The Broadway, Knaphill, woking
« on: Saturday 29 September 18 21:45 BST (UK) »
Good evening I hope I am in the correct area.  I am researching an ancestor who died in 1971 at 43 The Broadway Knaphill, her name was Kathleen Mary Cavanagh, she was born in 1915 in Chester.  I and the rest of the family haven't a clue as to why she was there so far away from her home and family.  Also she was a Roman Catholic so is there any RC church yards in that vicinity she could be buried? Also is there any newspapers that I can see online?
 Thank you.
 :)
Kind regards
Heather

What did she die of?  An online search throws up records of a number of apparently unrelated elderly people having died at that address in the 1960s and 1970s, so perhaps it was some sort of care home or other health facility.

Brookwood mental hospital was in that road.  :-\

It is possible that she was cremated, Woking crematorium is 'just down the road' at St Johns

ADDED I have just checked the 1960 electoral register which has The Broadway only numbering to no 33 on the odd side but 166 on the evens. From Ancestry http://www.rootschat.com/links/01msf/

Brookwood hospital was a large site on one side of the road so it looks as though No43 could be included in that site.  The site has now been redeveloped.

Heather

I had to go to Knaphill this morning so thought I would have a look for no 47 The broadway.

As someone else has said the area has been completely redeveloped since Brookwood Hospital closed in the 1990s   Standing outside no 48 and looking across the road and through the trees is the site of the Vyne Community Centre and a doctors' surgery   I would guess this is roughly the site of no 47.

If you go to Google Maps and search from either Knaphill GU21 2SP or Woking GU21 2SP you should be able to see what the area looks like now.

I did have a quick look at the National Library of Scotland site https://maps.nls.uk to see what they have for the area. It seems to be playing fields on the side of the road where 47 should be but I cant get a decent magnification on my screen.

I notice that you are still awaiting an answer to your question about the Roman Catholic churches.  The nearest RC church is St Hugh of Lincoln,  maybe 15 minutes walk away from The Vyne  see:
http://www.surreychurches.org.uk/woking/knaphillhugh.shtml

There is no graveyard a St Hugh's,  I can't remember when the RC Church lifted its ban on cremation, the nearest cemetery is at Brookwood.  http://www.surreycemeteries.org.uk/woking/brookwoodcem.shtml

I believe the LDS filmed the Brookwood  burial registers some years ago, or some of them are in the Surrey History Centre

There are two RC plots in Brookwood. http://www.brookwoodcemetery.com/plots-and-sections/
