I think he would have worked first for Arguellos then de Echiandia, assuming his appointment was confirmed. If not he may well have left Monterey and gone anywhere in the world.
The fact that no further letters seem to have reached the family make it most likely that he died somewhere abroad.
His letter is so interesting in that in 2 years he had travelled round Cape Horn to the South Seas, been delivered as a prisoner to the Governor of Guam for arguing with the ship's captain over treatment of patients, then travelled to various South American ports before reaching Monterey.
Not bad for a man whose father was a hairdresser in Salisbury!
