George Harris surgeon to Mexican Governor Monterey 1825
« on: Sunday 30 September 18 11:35 BST (UK) »
I have a copy of a letter sent home to Wiltshire from George Harris who was in Monterey in 1825.
He was born about 1796 in Wiltshire and seems to have left England in 1824 as a ship's surgeon on a ship bound for the South Seas to load with sperm oil, whalebone etc.
After various adventures he arrived in Monterey in April 1825. In his letter he says he is acting as surgeon to the current governor and hopes to be appointed as surgeon to the new governor. As the only surgeon in the country he planned to stay in Monterey for some years.
Beyond this letter I know nothing of his fate. He does not seem to have returned to England.
I've looked at some Monterey history, but would be grateful for any advice from someone with more knowledge of Californian records.
Thanks

Thanks Sandra.
I think he would have worked first for Arguellos then de Echiandia, assuming his appointment was confirmed. If not he may well have left Monterey and gone anywhere in the world.
The fact that no further letters seem to have reached the family make it most likely that he died somewhere abroad.
His letter is so interesting in that in 2 years he had travelled round Cape Horn to the South Seas, been delivered as a prisoner to the Governor of Guam for arguing with the ship's captain over treatment of patients, then travelled to various South American ports before reaching Monterey.
Not bad for a man whose father was a hairdresser in Salisbury!

Since José María de Echeandía preferred to live in San Diego, perhaps this article might give you some research ideas:

How to Do Genealogical Research in San Diego

This list of links features those of Monterey County, California

This might be a contact with more knowledge about that area than we can offer.
