Richard HENLEY m1760 Joanna PATER - who were they?
« on: Sunday 30 September 18 17:36 BST (UK) »
I have come to a standstill in this line and am hoping for some help.

On 12 Feb 1760 in Stoke in Teignhead, Richard HENLEY married Joanna PATER.  The marriage record (by license) has Richard of St Mary Church parish and Joanna otp.  The witnesses were John Bishop & John Campion, but I have no known connection for these surnames.

I have all I need on the family after the marriage (baptisms of children Joanna, Richard, Susanna, John, Edward, Elias, and Maria in Torquay, marriages, burials etc.) but I haven't discovered baptisms for Richard HENLEY and Joanna PATER.

Can anyone help?

Philip

Hi,

I wonder if Joanna could have been a widow? The Devon Marriages images that I can see don't seem to mention if the people are bachelors, spinsters, widowers or widows.

I ask because I noticed the marriage below Richard and Joanna, on the same day with the same witnesses. I think it might be John BEST instead of BISHOP :-\

John TUCKER
Margery FIELD
12 Feb 1760

This could be Margery's baptism,

Stoke in Teignmouth
29 Jan 1738
Margery
Parents:  John & Susanna FIELD

and possibly an older sister Joanna,

23 April 1733
Stoke in Teignmouth
Joanna
Father:  John FIELD

There is a marriage for Joanna,

Parish of West Ogwell
Thomas PATER and Joanna FIELD
both of Stokeintenhead
were married the 5th day of January 1753

I can see 2 children who seem to have the above parents,

Mary
01 Nov 1754

Thomas
29 Nov 1756

Stokeinteignhead
Parents: Thomas and Joanna PATER

Then nothing, I am looking for a death of Thomas PATER to see if Joanna could have been a widow.

This is just a theory but may be worth looking into.

Regards,
Daisy

Daisypetal thank you so much - the FIELD possibility could be a brilliant lead.

ADDED
- FamilySearch has a burial for Tho PETTER 1757 Devon, but no detail (no date, no parish)  ???

Oh boo and bother - he can't be Joanna's husband.

I haven't found a good free site for Devon PRs and the only sub I have at the moment is for Anc.

Hi,

If you get any clues I will happily look them up for you  :)  but I can't see anything else about them at FindMyPast at the moment.

Have you seen these?

http://devon-cat.swheritage.org.uk/records/QS/4/1755/Easter/RE/34

http://devon-cat.swheritage.org.uk/records/QS/4/1755/Midsummer/DI/8

Do you know if Richard HENLEY was a butcher?

I wonder if William could be his father or brother?

Sorry, so many questions :)

Thank you so much for your reply.  All good questions - but I'm short of answers!

I hadn't seen the SWHT references - they definitely look interesting if I can establish occupations.

I have no idea about occupations for anyone in this line yet (nothing helpful on PRs or BTs).  I'm at an early stage on this line so my next step is to go will hunting.

i'm still trying to follow up your idea that Johanna PATER might be Joanna FIELD, but I haven't found anything on it yet.
