My Family tree maker 17 has decided to leave me
« on: Monday 01 October 18 12:15 BST (UK) »
I went to Sync my tree this morning and no longer have the programme on my laptop.

I have a folder with things in that say FTM   etc but the 'exe' bit is missing and the largest all I have is something that is asking me to play it with windows media player -- so I ask it to change to FTM and nothing.

Luckily I have just seen that I can upload for free from the site - as I purchased previously.

But what I am worried about -- is WHY  this happened - and how did it happen..
Are my other files /programmes safe....

I have NORTON ANTI VIRUS full whack..

but I feel like I have a little man switching things about to suit himself.

going now to check it out - as best  I can

xin

I've just seen this, xinia.  I've posted about the same problem but don't seem to have even a file for FTM, there's nothing relating to FTM on my laptop.  I'm on windows 10, are you?

It is worrying how it can happen, isn't it.

I was pleased to read you can upload it for free from where you purchased it, I can't do that as don't remember where I purchased it from.

Have you now sorted things out?

FTM 2012 here. Also on Windows 10. Latest Windows update ran earlier this week. Just checked, and FTM is where it should be and opening,  although I unusually had to re-open the actual tree (it is usually already opened once FTM is opened).

Hope you both get sorted. Do you at least have back-ups of tree itself?

If you also had a Windows update in past week, can you roll back to previous restore point and see if this solves the problem?

Just found this:

Hope something suggested there might help.

Scotmum, your link looks interesting.  I have an appointment to keep now, I'll look into it more deeply this evening and let you know how I get on.

I did try a restore point lastnight - no luck.  I have my tree on Ancestry, but not all my notes etc.

Thank you again.

ooh sorry :) missed this

Right I sorted mine, but realise its not  illegal but not legal copy or some such thing.

I bought it from EBAY  oh dear

and it was sent to me via email..

LUCKILY my in box and I save all emails  for ever as far back as forever :)  and I searched the emails for the download .. and it gave me the address on Ebay that I purchased it from..
So asked him nicely - and he sent me an update.

It is working ok.. at the moment.
But FTM wont recognise my prog for future updates etc...

so its not really a .... bona fida.. ftm.. ho hum.. it works.
