The trial was at the Rutland Assizes, which were held at Oakham but covered the whole county.

The Stamford Mercury of 8 July 1836 reports that at the 30th June session Sam. Lee, Jos. Lee and Wm. Winterton were indicted for rioting at Empingham on 8 June.  The riot was concerning the new poor laws and they were part of a crowd of 50 or 60 who attacked/intimidated the Relieving Officer in order to obtain some money.  William Winterton claimed he was in the pub and didn't need relief but was fetched out to protect others who did.
MORGAN: Glamorgan, Durham, Ohio. DAVIS/DAVIES/DAVID: Glamorgan, Ohio.  GIBSON: Leicestershire, Durham, North Yorkshire.  RAIN/RAINE: Cumberland.  TAYLOR: North Yorks. BOURDAS: North Yorks. JEFFREYS: Worcestershire & Northumberland. FORBES: Berwickshire, CHEESMOND: Durham/Northumberland. WINTER: Durham/Northumberland. SNOWBALL: Durham.
