WW1 soldier - John Prebensen - Understanding his service details
« on: Tuesday 02 October 18 02:09 BST (UK) »
Hello there,

I have found my G G uncle, John Prebensen fought in WW1 as a private. I found his military record online on the archway website (a part of which I have attached).

I don't quite understand what it says about his service (military is not my field). In particular, I am confused, in regards to what it says about his regiment.. C Coy? B. Coy C 1? L.F.O? If anyone can clarify what it means - that would be fantastic.

Also if anyone has any suggestions of who or how I may obtain a copy of a photo connect with John Prebensen's military seryice - that would be wonderful.

Thank you for your time, any help anybody can provide is warmly appreciated.

Kindest regards,

Ashley

Hi,

 :)

I am fairly sure that L.F.O.  followed by Granted indicates that he was granted Leave (until) Further Orders.

C Coy means C Company etc. I know that the original War Diaries for Australian Regiments are online at Australian War Memorial and it would be worth finding out if NZ has the same archives.. then you can follow where he went on an almost daily basis.

Reading through his Service record I can't find any indication that he served overseas but died 19/11/1918 at Palmerston North. Only his medical record appears online.

Thank you :). Unfortunately John Prebensen died of the Great Flu Pandemic - he was looked after by his mother during his final days. It wouldn't surprise me if he didn't fight overseas, as WW1 was coming to a close.
