James William THEOBALD born about 1820. in Braintree, Essex
« on: Tuesday 02 October 18 09:57 BST (UK) »
Hello,

Can anyone please help me to learn more about my relatives in Braintree, Essex. James William THEOBALD (b. about 1820). He is my 3 x Great Grandfather. He married Louisa Jane CLARKE (b. 1818) in Braintree in around 1844. I believe they had one son, Henry James THEOBALD in Braintree in 1844.

I have not been able to trace my family back any further and am very keen to learn the origins of my surname and family.

Thanks in advance for any helpful advice...

I am having difficulty  finding James on 1841 or 1851 census. I do believe they might have been in St Pancras at a later date

It might be a good idea to purchase the marriage certificate James Theobold to Louisa Clarke 1844

I have found the following which may be your family

1841 Silk Mill Cottage Braintree
Judith Theobold aged 50 superintendent of silk mill
James aged 20 ag lab born

1851 same address as above
Judith Theobald 64 widow  born Pebmarsh, still employed at silk mill
Eliza aged 39

1851 Webber St Southwark, London
James  Wm Theobald aged 31 born Braintree horse keeper
Louisa aged 32 Braintree
Henry ages 6 born Braintree

Possible death for Judith  Theobald in Halstead registration district  1852 aged 65 which ties up with 1851 census

Thank you so much for all of that information - I really appreciate it. I will add this to the other records I have found.

I have good information about Henry but can't seem to find out who James William THEOBALD's parents are. I have tracked James after 1841 but can't find his baptism record or anything else to go by to take my tree back further.

Do you know how I might go about ordering the birth certificate as all I have is the information in the England & Wales, Civil Registration Marriage Index.

I still carry the family name so would really love to go back as far as I can on this side of my family tree.

Thanks again,

Prior to 1837 you cannot get a certificate, registration started in 1837, we have to rely on parish records, Essex record office might hold the records for Braintree and Pebmarsh where Judith came from, James states he was born in Braintree, that might be a bigger area to search, consider SEAX as I have mentioned to you

By the way "welcome to Rootschat"

That makes perfect sense and is really helpful info for me to use in the future. I will definitely consider SEAX and am hopeful I'll be able to learn more.

Thank you for the warm and very helpful welcome :)

From the SEAX parish records for Braintree, the marriage for James and Louisa was 17th February 1844 by banns. Both of the parish. Strangely no signatures of the two or the vicar or witnesses. Isn’t scratched out as not happening either.
Jamiesons, Martins and McGonigals of Coleraine, Londonderry
and
Cullens, Grahams and Challenors of Dublin county and city.
