Hi Shume:   Yes, that is entirely possible.   I have come across a couple of inconsistencies in other military records, and I've had to do additional research to prove one way or another.   His entire family is C. of E. and it seemed very unlikely that he would change once he enlisted.  Thanks for the additional input - appreciated!

Another possibility is that, like my own father, he deliberately declared himself RC to avoid having to attend the CofE Sunday morning church parades every week - kitchen fatigues being preferable.
