Thank you Heywood...i have no evidence that Thomas is the brother of Francis...but just going on that they both come from galway.and both ended up in tynemouth.and they are both in the same age bracket...jenny

Hi Jenny,

How do you know Francis was from Galway? Do you have other information besides the censuses?
I agree re the Tynemouth connection however.

I haven’t seen it in censuses but as you say, both Thomas and Francis are  in Northumberland in 1851 and 1861.
Francis isn’t with his family in 1851 - have you found him?

G'day,

I don't know how much help this will be, but here goes ...

My 3rd great-grandfather was Francis Melville, born c. 1829, Galway, Ireland son of John Melville and Catherine Kelly, married to Jane Alice Dowling (nee Taylor) in Goulburn, NSW, Australia. I'm currently researching John and Catherine and am in the process of determining if this John Melville was convicted of being a whiteboy and was sentenced to life in the colony New South Wales. One record I am trying to decipher, states that John Melville was married with two children at the time of his conviction in Galway, 1832.
