He was George William Taylor (labourer) and served in the East Yorkshire Regiment, no 28754.
His Army service record notes his marriage to Margaret on 28 August 1915 at St Andrew’s, Hull, and the birth of Muriel on 10 February 1916. Their home address was 8 Wilkinson Terrace, Beaumont St, Hull.
He enlisted in October 1916 aged 22 years 2 months, and was sent to France on 10 January 1917.
He was reported missing on 24 April 1917.
Margaret was told by letter dated 9 October 1917 that nothing further had been heard, and she was required to report any news she had of him. She sent a very sad reply saying that she had heard nothing from him; that his “pal” in France had written to George’s sister saying that George was dead before being blown up, but the sister had destroyed the letter and the “pal” could not be traced as he was ill somewhere in France.
George’s service record shows that he was then included in a list of dead soldiers received by the War Office from Germany in November 1917, but this was treated as provisional and George was still “missing” when his wife was awarded a pension for herself and their child on 24 December 1917. It looks as though he may have been formally declared dead in January 1918, but the relevant form was not fully completed so it is not very clear.
