Tear family of Whitehaven, help needed
« on: Wednesday 03 October 18 16:44 BST (UK) »
I am looking for help with the Tear family of Whitehaven, Cumberland.
I have details of Martha Tear 1831 who married William Pharaoh. Her parents were James and Ann Tear.
I am looking for details of her family. I think two of her brothers, James 1821 and Robert 1827 were killed in a mining accident in 1839. In 1841 Martha and her sister Sarah 1837 were in the workhouse but with no other members of their family. Their mother Ann may have died in 1837. Other siblings are Elizabeth 1824, George 1824, Eleanor 1825. I have no other details of parents or the children. Cant find any in 1841. I do not know what happened to the father James Tear.

Greetings, and a warm welcome to Rootschat

The General Register Office index https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/login.asp (free to register and search) has:
Death Mar qtr 1839 Whitehaven vol 25 p98    TEAR James age 18
Death Mar qtr 1839 Whitehaven vol 25 p98    TEAR Robert age 12.

The UK Coal Mining Accidents and Deaths Index 1878-1935 has James and Robert died on 18 Feb 1839 in an explosion of gas.

It's going to be a struggle to find deaths/burials before 1837 as there is almost nothing yet transcribed or indexed online.  There are baptisms and marriages, but the only burials I can find are for St Bee's (which has a few PHARAOHs but no TEARs)  :( http://bega.org.uk/gateway/graveyard/public/database/view_graves_name.php.

There is a death for Ann TEAR in Whitehaven Sep qtr 1837 on GRO, but she is aged 0, so she can't be the mother of Martha.

I have a horrible suspicion that this might be one of those searches which will have to weait until more records come online, unless you are anywhere near Cumbria Archives with time to spare! https://www.cumbria.gov.uk/archives/Online_catalogues/Ecclesiastical/parish.asp

Thank you for the information. I'll try again to find the rest of the family in 1841. Just want to know why the two little ones are in the workhouse. Might be a possibility that the Ann who died as a baby could have been a twin to Sarah, there was another set of twins in the family.

Possibly the Ann Tear who died 1837 was this one
Anne Tear baptised 30 Jun 1837 Holy Trinity Whitehaven
Parents John & Frances

Where did you find the births of the other children
the only Eleanor Tear I can find at correct time in Whitehaven was daughter of Thomas & Ann -not James and Ann

there are other children with parents Thomas and Ann

Robert & James died in a mining explosion in William Pit about 2am, 23 men & boys lost their lives ages ranging from 10 to 60 years old, very sad.

I have details of Martha Tear 1831 who married William Pharaoh. Her parents were James and Ann Tear.

Would this be Dec qtr 1852 Whitehaven vol 10b p595 (FreeBMD have William's surname as FARRER)?  If so, do you have the marriage certificate, and does it state if Martha's father was deceased?  Were the witnesses family members?

To add to suzard's 1861 find:

1851 census
HO107/2347/127 - Union Workhouse, Preston Quarter, Cumberland
p5 TEAR John, 10, pauper scholar, born Whitehaven
p5 TEAR William, 9, pauper scholar, born Whitehaven
p10 TEAR Robert, 5, pauper scholar, born Whitehaven
p11 TEAR Sarah, 11, pauper scholar, born Whitehaven

I wonder if there were two TEAR families?  Or did the family's circumstances improve after 1841 then decline before 1851?  I'll have a look at GRO to track these births.
