To add to suzard's 1861 find:

1851 census
HO107/2347/127 - Union Workhouse, Preston Quarter, Cumberland
p5 TEAR John, 10, pauper scholar, born Whitehaven
p5 TEAR William, 9, pauper scholar, born Whitehaven
p10 TEAR Robert, 5, pauper scholar, born Whitehaven
p11 TEAR Sarah, 11, pauper scholar, born Whitehaven

I wonder if there were two TEAR families? Or did the family's circumstances improve after 1841 then decline before 1851?  I'll have a look at GRO to track these births.

There were definately two or three, possibly more,  Tear families in Whitehaven at the same time. Most probably related.
Thanks for info about Eleanor. Father is Thomas not James and same with Elizabeth. George son of James and Elizabeth dau of Thomas were baptised on the same day. Wondering if thomas and James might have been brothers. More to check.

It looks like the Tear children with mother's maiden name Martin are the children of Mary Martin married ????Tear (haven't found marriage) Mary was widowed before 1849 and she then married James Gilmoor (Jun qtr 1849 Whitehaven) and by 1861 she was widowed again and had some of her children living with her
