Thomas Cleveland, b. 1809 or 1816?
« on: Wednesday 03 October 18 17:17 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

I'm looking at Thomas Cleveland, born in Gloucester, and am trying to work out his birth date. The 1871, 1881 and death certificate give a birth date of around 1809, and the 1851 census gives a date of 1824. I know from his marriage certificate (25 Dec 1843, Rothwell, Northamptonshire) that his father was John Cleveland, a fellmonger. The only Gloucester baptism I have found for a Thomas Cleveland born to John is a non-conformist record that gives his birth date as 3 Nov 1816. I know self-given birth dates are not always reliable and people could give a take a few years, but is a 7 year discrepancy quite unlikely? Would like to know your thoughts before I delve further.

Best wishes
Samuel

Just in case you don't have it (or to save other Rootschatters searching) the 1841 census has:
folio 46 piece 380 page 7, Cirencester:
CLEVELAND John, 45, fellmonger (Anc***** transcribed as CHARLAND)
but no sign of a wife or family.

Looking at the 1871 entry his wife is Ann b Wiltshire whereas 1851 shows Catherine b Northants.  Did Catherine die and Thomas remarried?

1851 shows dtr Sarah 2 whereas 1871 has Sarah 26

Thomas appears to have been baptised before he was born ;D. Suspect 1816 should be 1815 or vice versa

It does seem that the 1851 enumerator was having an off day.  Unless of course there are two (or more) Thomas CLEVELANDs.  What was Thomas' occupation on the marriage cert and censuses?

ADDITION
1851 census HO107 1968 p23 (Anc*****) Gloucester Street, Cirencester
CLEVELAND John 61, head, fell monger, born Bedford
CLEVELAND Mary 48, wife, laundress, born Duntshorne Gloucs
CLEVELAND Joseph A 14 , son, fell monger, born Gloucester Gloucs
CLEVELAND Frederick W 4, son, born Cirencester, Gloucs

(GRO) Birth registered Jun qtr 1846 Gloucester Union vol 11 p264 CLEVELAND Frederick William mmn WOOLLEY
My guess is that Mary WOOLLEY (born c1803) was John's second wife, married before 1837.
