George Hammond
« on: Wednesday 03 October 18 21:56 BST (UK) »
Hello Everyone,

First time posting. I am hoping someone can help me in following my Hammond lineage to and beyond George Hammond, father of Miles Hammond, born 1799 in Vermont who died in 1876.

Some back story: It was not terribly difficult to work from current ancestors to discover the Mother of Asa A. Hammond 1822-1898 was Rachel Yapel 1798-1881.  However, many records indicated that a Richard Hammond was Rachel’s spouse, which was a dead end.  Some investigation and assistance from my good aunt Sandy revealed that “Richard” didn’t exist.  Someone mis-transcribed the 1850 census for Rachel Hammond as Richard.  Rachel was married 15 Dec 1815 in Danby, Tioga, New York to Miles Hammond. (

I found two locations that indicate George Hammond as Miles Hammond’s father.

I feel that the “Richard” snafu may have slowed some investigation.  There is quite a bit of earlier Hammond information available (such as: but I’m having difficulty locating anyone with a George Hammond for a son who was born in the 1750-1780ish range or a George Hammond with Miles Hammond for a son. If anyone can help with the missing links or point me in the right direction I would really appreciate it.  I am fairly new to the hobby.  Thank you!

The link I quoted states "Miles was the son of George Hammond, Miles died in 1876." however, the record for the War of 1812 Pension Application Files Index, 1812-1815 for Miles Hammond states that Miles, husband of Rachel Yapel, died on 12 Apr 1834 in Orion, Michigan.

Just wanted to point that out, as if they are so far out on the death death, they might be quite wrong on the father being George.
