Maybe it was misheard? It rhymes with Durris, Kincardineshire.

Hello Xin

Culross is pronounced ... kurəs / curas

A village and former royal burgh, and parish, in Fife, Scotland.

http://www.dsl.ac.uk/entry/snd/snds4992
also Courus

The Correspondence of the Rev. Robert Wodrow
If you be out of the post road, the carriers from Courus [Culross] will bring any thing you favour me with weekly.

Not convinced about rhyming with Durris btw. My friends who used to live at Durris pronounce it
DURR-iss - 'Durr' rhyming with 'burr' and 'iss' to rhyme with 'miss'.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Yes, Culross is one of those Scottish towns whose spelling gives no clue as to the actual pronunciation. "Curas" is quite a good way to spell it. It's the most perfectly-preserved Scottish town of the 17th/18th century and is a popular film location.

I'll attach a photo.
