Just to say, Elizabeth’s Place is birth is “Fort William, Inverness”, on the 1871 census, not Fort George.

Are we looking for a marriage prior to 1861 census? Possibly, after 1841?

Oh, to find him in 1851!  :(

Cheers

Can’t discount that he joined Army, perhaps only a 10-12 year engagement - and met and married Elizabeth that way, and could be overseas in 1851?

I will have a look through the army records. Fort George may be a red herring, as if it was Fort William Elizabeth would not have an army connection. Understanding Williams parents and siblings may be of assistance.

My apologies I had noted Fort George from the original post. However a similar situation for Fort William no births are noted on SP for either. I wonder if all the army records were collated at Fort Augustus, the only one of the 3 Forts noted on SP. Six Elizabeth's 1811 - 1816 the years on the 3 census returns.

I have started looking for their deaths, hoping it may be a clue. The only William Payne I can find where the dates match is a death in Leeds Dec 1896, aged 78. I have looked through Yorkshire, North, East & West. Cannot find the Leeds William Payne in the 1891 census.

William PAYNE and Catherine JILLINGS who married 1816, may be the couple who had children baptised in Otley, incl two job-lots in 1825 and 1837 with the birth dates of the children dating between 1821 and 1835?   They're in Otley 1841 & 1851. I think she died 1852 (Kitty) and he 1858?

Have you got all those details, as possible parents/siblings of your William? Been looking at marriages of some of those, see if a good-looking witness pops up - no luck so far!

Elizabeth's death looks likely to be:

Many thanks. It is always difficult to be sure the information given, the further you go back, can be trusted. I always like to have belt and braces, if humanly possible. I have 10 children for Catherine & William. In my notes for this family, the 1841 census shows that William & Henry are missing.
