There is a declaration of intent for John Alpine MacInnes born Scotland 16 Jul 1860 Invernesshire, dated 1917. He is living in Oakland , California , his wife , Annabella, is living in Santa Cruz. He is employed as a night watchman. The record mentions emigrating on the SS Southwark in 1910 , as mentioned earlier.

Here is a John "N" Mcinnes , born Scotland 1861 , living in Oakland , California in 1920. He is divorced and arrived in 1910. It seems to fit with the other records :

Is this John Mcinnes ?

John McInnes  7 Feb 1851 Ballachulish , parents John McInnis and Mary Cameron

If it is the right one this death record could fit :

John McInnes  born 11 Mar 1862 , parents McInnes and Cameron ,died 23 Jan 1955 ( ! )
Siskiyou, California
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:VPWM-W5Z

Found this man on the census in Siskiyou , a miner who emigrated in 1886 , so not the right one.

Thank you so much for that Christine. That is certainly them on the passenger list. Rev MacAskill was Annabella's brother. Strangely enough, this afternoon I was visiting the family who live in the house where Tartan John lived before he left Scotland.
Thanks again.

The border crossing says John was going to join his brother-in-law in Santa Cruz.  https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QS7-99D3-YKC5?i=3415&cc=2185163

Sorry -I didn't scroll down to see the rest of the comments.
So they were divorced after all - very interesting.
I'm not sure about the death -maybe the age given was wrong. He was definitely born in June 1850 and was the son of Dugald MacInnes and Jean McAlpine.

There is a death notice for Annabella in the Santa Cruz newspaper - http://www.rootschat.com/links/01mtl/  Internment in the family plot in the Odd Fellows' cemetery.
