Not a ladylike occupation!
« on: Saturday 06 October 18 15:58 BST (UK) »
In UK censuses I have found an ancestor or two described on censuses as "needlewoman" (one in a household of around half a dozen others with the same occupation) and thought to myself - hmmmmm, I wonder.

Then, while looking for a US serviceman, I found this in the 1940 US census for Hawaii - they didn't shy away from 'telling it like it is'!

If you put "Prostitute" in "Occupation" in the England 1881 census you get 425 results. 103 are "Patients", 65 are "Inmates", 73 are "Prisoners" so 243 are "at home"

Which particular entry is "telling it like it is"?

I've read it a few times and even looked at the original document and still can't see it.  (Hope I'm not embarrassing myself here!)

Four of the people have "prostitute" as an occupation.

There are also some interesting transcription errors.  I very much doubt Francis James Spilsbury, Thomas Henry Wood and others would appreciate being transcribed as Register Medical Prostitute on Anc***** 1911 England census.  ;D ;D ;D

Ah, it wasn't visible in the screenshot posted and I was using my phone for the original (screen rather small for viewing full length).

Given his actual occupation I shouldn't think he would be too pleased about that transcription  ;D
