rescue of a ships crew by George Prike, Skipper of the Leverton trawler
« on: Saturday 06 October 18 17:46 BST (UK) »
I wondered if anyone could throw any light on a story I have been told, regarding the rescue of a ship's crew, by my relative George Prike.  It possibly happened around 1893 and I think George and his crew received awards for this.

At the time, George was Skipper of the trawler Leverton.  He was living in Grimsby in the 1881, 1891 and 1901 censuses, so possibly this ship sailed out of there.

Thanks for any help.

Hello Diana,
Congleton & Macclesfield Mercury 10 November 1894
Recognitions of Bravery
The Board of Trade have received, through the Consul General for Sweden and Norway, a silver medal of the second class for saving life for George Prike, master, and silver medals of the third class for Frederick Hargreaves and Edward Howes, seamen of the fishing smack LEVERTON of Boston, which have been awarded to them by the Norwegian steamer TZARO in January last.

That's brilliant, thank you Hugh.  So the trawler sailed out of Boston.  I wonder how that worked, when George lived in Grimsby?

How can I access that article please?

Thanks,

Diana

You can access it via FindMyPast - https://search.findmypast.co.uk/search/british-newspapers
There are a couple of small articles referencing same.

LEVERTON official number 98288 was built in South Shields and registered in Boston in 1890.

The rescue itself is reported in the Lincolnshire Echo 25 Jan 1894.

Boston Deep Sea Fishing company which moved to Fleetwood in the 1920s after a refusal by Boston council to grant them permission to expand. There are pictures of a BDSFCo Trawler on this site so a Search might be worthwhile
