Fresh eyes needed Shutts or Shults
« on: Sunday 07 October 18 04:11 BST (UK) »
Am hoping maybe some fresh eyes might help me unlock my 4 x great grandmother Sarah Shutts/Shults it could be either.

The first I know of her is when she married Charles Stevens in 1805 St George Hanover Square.  It was a hard family to trace but with DNA matches the puzzle came together.  I descend from their daughter Elizabeth Sarah Stevens she was Born in Horton Buckinghamshire, her eldest brother however was born in Whitechapel.  Charles Stevens father James Stevens was a farmer in Buckinghamshire and left a will.  Charles and two of his his brothers it seems we’re involved in candles and soap making and a younger brother Henry remained on the land. So children etc seem to be devided between London and Horton ... the brothers are buried in Horton.  However I can not find where Charles ended up so that’s another mystery.

Charles’ younger brother  Henry married into the Littlewood family which is why I think the marriage I found for Charles to Sarah Shutts/Shults is the right one.

On the marriage it gives Ann Littlewood as one witness and Thomas Shutts as the other witness.  My dilemma being who is Sarah Shutts/Shults.  I thought is Thomas her brother or her father but the only baptisim I can find for a Sarah is Sarah Shults born in 1777 in St Giles in the Fields Holborn to a Fredrick and Elizabeth Shults.  But then that would make her 30 when she has her first child and then how does Thomas (the witness) fit.  The surname I’m guessing could be spelt quite a few different ways and I don’t know if it’s Shutts or Shults.

So I’m totally stuck if anyone else might have some advice?

Blessings
Deb

Thank you Daisy I did wonder if she might belong to this couple another descendant of Sarah and her husband Charles feels this is the right couple too.  There is also a Martha 1780 that there is a baptisim for for same couple just can’t find a baptisim for Sarah but now at at least it seems you’ve found Thomas.  The surname seems to be spelt lots of ways even Schutz and Schultz.  I suspect they might have originated in Germany.

It’s probably more likely than the Sarahb 1777 of Frederick and Elizabeth Shults as she would of been 30 when she had her first child and 46 when she had her last, although not impossible.

Thank you for looking for me much appreciated.

Blessings
Deb

There is a marriage on Ancestry between Thomas Shutts & Frances Mendham on 26 Oct 1811 at St George, Bloomsbury, and Thomas's signature looks very similar to the signature (on F M P) to the Thomas Shutts who witnessed Sarah's marriage - what do you think?

MORGAN: Glamorgan, Durham, Ohio. DAVIS/DAVIES/DAVID: Glamorgan, Ohio.  GIBSON: Leicestershire, Durham, North Yorkshire.  RAIN/RAINE: Cumberland.  TAYLOR: North Yorks. BOURDAS: North Yorks. JEFFREYS: Worcestershire & Northumberland. FORBES: Berwickshire, CHEESMOND: Durham/Northumberland. WINTER: Durham/Northumberland. SNOWBALL: Durham.

I saw that marriage on the week end and I had wondered if that was our Thomas I hadn’t thought to compare signitures but you are right it certainly does.  Which makes me think the Martha Shutts that other trees have as a sister to Sarah and Thomas ... maybe she isn’t?  She was baptised in 1780 in St Marylebone and there is a marriage in 1800 in the same place to a John Henry Norman but Martha doesn’t sign her own name where Sarah in her marriage to Charles Stevens does.  I thought why would one daughter be able to write and the other not?  Although Martha’s parents are a Thomas and Ann Shutts and there is also a Robert Shutts born 1778 baptised St Marylebone and his death.  I still can’t find a baptism for Sarah.

At least this signature does look to be off the same Thomas who witnessed Sarah’s marriage so likely to be her brother and not her father.

Thank you :-)
