Hockley Warwickshire Help please# moved to Armed Forces WW1
« on: Sunday 07 October 18 08:33 BST (UK) »
Please I need some help, I am researching our local memorial in Hockley Essex, I have a Walter Fletcher on it, from the CWGC I found W. Fletcher 2753 2nd Bn , Northumberland Fusiliers who died on 26th April 1915, on Uk Soldiers died in the Great War, said Birth Place Hockley Essex. I believe it wrong.
Clue 1, Soldier effects, left to wife Matilda, marriage to Matilda Richards in 1911 Bakewell.
1901 census Sedgley Walter born Hockley, living with father Henry and brothers Thomas & Alfred, also Alfred married Gertrude Richards in Dudley 1907.
I have been looking locally in Essex for Roll of Honour in newspapers, please can anyone find any more on this man. Many thanks

I can't see why you think the birthplace is "wrong".
or even how you tie this death to a birthplace, particularly where no age is given at death?

On the cwgc I see no deaths between Monday, March 20, 1916 and Saturday, May 6, 1916 for W Fletcher.??

in 1915 (the year before), there is one, but nothing about age, next-of-kin etc.

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:W3DB-6T2 (1891 same family?)
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:Q27N-NDG8 (1881?)

Do the birth registration in the GRO index support an Essex or a warwickshire birth?

The only Essex birth in Rochford was a Walter James in 1874 and he was on the 1939 register, Walter was born in Sept Qtr 1891 mother Howe.

Walter died 26th April 1915, medal card, no war diary
No children and no details of Matilda widow.

So how did you tie the 1915 death chap to this one?

You still have not said how you connect W Fletcher d 1915 to the Walter Fletcher b 3/9/1892.

The only connection I have is the place HOCKLEY and W.Fletcher . I am researching all the WW1 men on our memorial for a display in our library this November, everyone even if they were not born in the area had a connection, I would like to make sure I have done my best for Walter Fletcher and can not find all his details.

My apologies for asking possibly stupid questions.

You say that Walter Fletcher's name appears on the Hockley, Essex Memorial for those killed in WW1.  Do you know when that memorial was erected?

Have you seen the actual entry in the UK Soldiers died in the Great War, or are you relying on the transcriptions that appear on Ancestry and FindMyPast?  To me it seems rather strange that a man who is shown on the 1901 census as being born in Hockley, Warwickshire and enlists in Wolverhampton, should be deemed to be from Hockley in Essex.   :-\

You say that there is no War Diary - not quite correct as the diary is available to view, but unfortunately "other rank" casualties are not named, and he was obviously injured prior to 26 April 1915.
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.
Remember - "They'll be found when they want to be found" !!!
If you don't ask the question, you won't get an answer.
