Farr and Rowberry
« on: Sunday 07 October 18 12:49 BST (UK) »
I would be grateful for help I have got back as far as a marriage certificate between Emma Rowberry aged 22 and George Farr 22 a dealer

They married in 1853 in Bristol, Georges father was William a dealer Emma's father was John a coach proprietor

The witnesses were Edward Farr and Sophia Jenkins

On the 1871 census Emma was living in Pontnewynydd as a widow  ( born Brecon 1834 )with her were children Henry 13 Elizabeth 14 and William Farr 9 (the line I am following )
I cant for the life of me find them in 1861 which would  tell me were her husband George was born  so i can get back further I am not even sure of Emma Rowberry descendants

In  1851 There is an Emma (Trevethin Pontypool) with mother Elizabeth, no father at house although Elizabeth is said to be married  In 1841 there is an Emma is living Trevethin Pontypool  with father John and mother Mary same dates of birth but different place of birth
I am wondering why they married in Bristol as well

In my Monmouthshire research I've had trouble finding 1861 Census records - I think there are missing sections.  People from Monmouthshire seem to have married in Bristol for all sorts of reasons and sometimes for no apparent reason at all!  It's a subject discussed recently by members of the Mongenes website which has been set up for people with Monmouthshire ancestry.  Might be worth having a look at it to see if you would find it useful.

I've had a quick look at this for you.  According to the censuses you've found, Emma's children were born in Trevethin and I think I can see a possible George Farr in a family there in the 1851 Census, with William as a middle name.  If that's the right one, there's an 1870 death which would fit in with when you've found Emma as a widow.

Emma gives her place of birth as Brecon and I can see a possible baptism for her there in 1833, surname spelled Robery I think it said.  Have to go shopping now, I'll have a look later to see if others have chipped in to help or whether you need more.

I don't know if you are aware of it, but there is a one-name study for the Rowberry name, run by a lady called Polly Rubery.

Thanks everyone for the info

Sorry I should have said that on William 1861( the one descended from)
His marriage cert stated his fathers name was  George Stanley Farr a farmer (deceased) when he married Agnes Mary Edmonds in Piccadilly in 1882  On censuses  it said he was born in Pontypool William John was a Sailor at that time
I found William  1861 Pontypool with mother Rowberry
Could there be a mistake in this marriage cerificate on line  and could George William  be the one

there are two other William Farrs around Pontypool at that time, one the son of Edward, the witness to the marriage of George & Emma, and he married Amelia Phillips in 1880 and the other the son of John Farr and he married Jane Ann Leonard 17 April 1889.

So it does look like the William, son of George, is yours and there may have been a mistake with his middle name on the marriage cert. William would have been quite young when his father died & it may have been his error or may been made by the person filling out the register.
