Captain Philip Howard Conyers Walker (1888-1954) apparently won a Military Cross and Bar in WWI.
My cousin says:
"I have found grandfather’s (P H Walker) military cross and Bar.
He had the rank of captain and is listed as serving in the 234th (2nd West Riding) Brigade RFA of the 49th WR Division."
The report of Philip's wedding (1924) says "he is a captain in the 276th Ilkley Howitzer Battery and served with the Ilkley Battery during the war, winning the Military Cross."
Can anybody tell us how Philip won those medals specifically.
Thanks
Richard
P.S. It may have been 236th rather than 234th.

The London Gazette 10th November 1919. That's one MC, whether it's the first or the Bar I can't tell. It's worth searching the London Gazette online although the search isn't wonderful, depending on some rather iffy optical character recognition.

Thanks very much Graham.
I shall forward the information to my cousin. I'll try researching the London Gazette too.

The London Gazette 10th November 1919. That's one MC, whether it's the first or the Bar I can't tell.

I think this LG entry is for the second MC i.e the bar, for a couple of reasons:

* He already has 'MC' listed after his name in the title;
* It's awarded for conspicuous gallantry on 13 October 1918, so fairly late in the proceedings;
* The brackets at the end state that his [original MC] was gazetted 3rd June 1918 [which should narrow your search  ;) ]

Hope that helps.

Hi,

Here is the entry listed in 3rd June 1918 Gazette: https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/issue/30716/supplement/6472/data.pdf

Unfortunately not the citation though, just a listing of those awarded the MC.

Your man is in the left hand column, about a third of the way down.

Hope this helps.

Kind regards

Hi again Richard,

As there isn't a citation in the LG for the first MC, you could post a query on the Military board here, or you could try the Great War Forum www.greatwarforum.org - someone in either place might know what the Captain's brigade was up to around the time of his 1st MC award or may have the War Diary.  Might help get an idea of where he was etc.  It all builds the story!

Best wishes

That's a good idea Rockford.
I haven't been on the Great War forum in quite a while, so I'll get on there.
