Passengers to Cape Town
« on: Monday 08 October 18 20:49 BST (UK) »
Hi, please could someone with the correct know how (and subscriptions ) help. I'm trying to ascertain when George Stevens b 1817 and his wife Sophia Ann Stevens from Rochester Kent travelled to Cape Town. They probably had at least 1 child, George Henry Stevens, with them. The family talk is that it was 1848, but I haven't been able to verify that. Much appreciated.

Do you know when George Henry (son) was born?

Are they on the 1841 census in England still?

I've only managed via their death certificates to track down that they were married on 07/25/1839 at Strood, Kent. I couldn't find a census record nor any document indicating how old the child was when they left.

Wow that's really interesting  thanks! So in 1841 George was a police constable? All I know is that he started a brick factory in South Africa. And Frances Ann was 1. I don't know anything more about her. Charles Horsley Brunel was declared insolvent in London in 1900 and died in Bulawayo in 1944. Callcott was a civil servant. I have come across a George Henry, from Rochester, who married Eva Catarina Filinia Kirsten in Cape Town after first beating him a son. But beyond where his home was (Blaauberg) I don't have anything stronger to be sure he's the George Henry son of George.

If you go to Family Search and search for George Henry Stevens, put place of birth as Rochester England and limit the search to South Africa, you will get results for his and George Stevens probate files. George Henry and the other siblings you mention are listed as children on George Stevens probate record. Only the Death Notice is there, but I will see if I can track down the Estate File.
