Carfine Miln ?
« on: Thursday 11 October 18 02:08 BST (UK) »
One of my ancestors is John Lang. His name is recorded in the OPRs from Bothwell parish at the birth and baptism of his daughter, Ann Lang in 1734. In the entry, he is described as, "John Lang in Carfine Miln." In another entry for the baptism of his son, William Lang in 1732, he is described as "John Lang in Carfine b_dgend (sp?) Does anyone have any idea of what or where Carfine Miln was? Thanks so much!

Carfin is on the north side of the Calder Water, and the mill was on the river bank. See
https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/#zoom=16&lat=55.7953&lon=-3.9551&layers=5&b=1

You can see that it was very close to the bridge, so it wouldn't be surprising if the mill had been described as at Bridgend of Carfin.

If you click on the blue button on the left of the map and slide it to the left, you can see that there have been huge changes there. The mill seems to have disappeared, as have Carfin House and Carfin Bridge.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Good find Forfarian and you are correct, nothing remains now from that time. Ravenscraig Steel Works came all the way down to the river (opposite bank) and nothing remains at all. The whole area is now in the Motherwell post code. That particular part of the river is now underground for a short distance and there are new roads and houses everywhere. Dalziel Park Golf Club is a little to the right.
It is strange to think that this was part of Bothwell parish, as it was on the other side of Dalziel.

Miln was the old Scots word for mill.

Wow! Thanks so much! So Carfin was an estate, and John Lang would've been a tenant on this estate?

I suppose the mill was part of the estate, they usually were. Carfin is also a village. I'm unsure who owned Carfin House, I've been looking through stuff I have on Dalziel parish and there is no mention of it.
No mention of a burial place at Dalziel either, bearing in mind that during the period you are researching, Dalziel kirk (the parish church) would have been the one this family attended. The church at Bothwell village would have been too far to travel to in those days. There were other choices of course, Cambusnethan or Shotts but Dalziel was only about 2 miles away.
Bothwell parish was very large and there was another church at Holytown but I don't think it was built until around the end of the 18th century.
Can you give us any more information on this family?

The family is as follows:
Husband: John Lang
Wife: Helen Nasmith
Children: Jean Lang (b. 14 August 1725, baptized 22 August 1725 in Bothwell parish), John Lang (b. 12 December 1727, baptized 16 December 1727 in Bothwell parish), William Lang (b. 24 August 1732, baptized 17 September 1732 in Bothwell parish), Ann Lang (b. 30 November 1734, baptized 23 December 1734 in Bothwell parish), James Lang (b. 19 December 1736, baptized 2 January 1737 in Bothwell parish), Eupham Lang (b. 26 February 1742, baptized 4 April 1742 in Hamilton parish)

John Lang (father) is described as from Carfine Miln on the baptism entry for Ann Lang, and from Carfine Bridgend on the baptism entry for William Lang.
