Andrew SPALDING / Katharine MARR (m. 1786 St Nicholas, Aberdeen)

Hi. First post to this Forum, so please forgive me if my request is unintelligible...!!

I've tracked back through my direct line to this couple, who had 6 children between 1786-1797. According to SP, Katharine MARR was married twice before (to David CUM(M)ING, m 1757, 4/5 children; and George STED?, m 1780, 0 children). All the SP OPR marriage records note her father was James MARR, butcher in Aberdeen (deceased in 1780). I have not been able to confirm death dates for any of the husbands.

However, I'm not sure whether this is all the same Katharine MARR - if she married first in 1757, then even if she was very young at that time, she must have been at least 55+ when she has her last child with Andrew SPALDING (Francis SPALDING, b. 1797). Is this reasonable ??

I'd also greatly appreciate any additional information on this couple (or, indeed, places to look), particularly Andrew SPALDING.

The only record I can find in Aberdeenshire is on family search Katherine Mar baptism 31 March 1737 Old Macher, parents James & Jean Scot

The other records on SP are more or less those you mention

CUMMING   DAVID   KATHARINE MARR   19/09/1757   Aberdeen
4 children 1763 – 1768 Katherine with a C. James eldest

STED   GEORGE   KATHARINE MARR   28/05/1780   Aberdeen

My opinion is that the above is separate from below but not sure about George Sted and proving it may be difficult.


SPALDING   ANDREW   KATHARINE MARR   28/01/1786   Aberdeen

Andrew & Alexander 1786, Mary 1788, James 1794, Agnes 1795, Francis 1797, George 1800


You will note one extra in 1800 which means the earlier marriages are less likely to be connected.

Assuming Andrew & this Katherine were born 1750 – 1770, there is no evidence in Aberdeen but looking elsewhere there are possibilities, such as:
 
SPALDING   ANDREW   ANDREW SPALDING/ELIZABETH ALEXANDER    19/08/1753   Leith South

The only other Katherine Marr I can find is again on Family Search, baptism 16 Dec 1764, Melrose, Roxburgh, parents James & Janet Mercer.

Thanks for your efforts and for your response. I'll certainly look in to the birth records for Andrew SPALDING and Katharine MARR outside Aberdeen. However, looking at the SP record for George SPALDING, it looks like the mother is Margaret GRANT (not Katharine MARR); there is an SP record for Andrew SPALDING marrying Margaret GRANT in 1792 in Old Machar, so I don't think this is the same family.
