Lax registration of death
« on: Sunday 14 October 18 13:43 BST (UK) »
I've just found a death in 1957 on behalf of a friend.

It took place at Our Lady's Hospital in Navan (An Uaimh), and the person in charge registered a group of deaths at the same time - the last four entries on the page I can see, and possibly more over the page.

However, looking at the first of this group, registered on 10 April 1957, I saw that the death actually occurred nearly a year earlier, on 28 April 1956.

There is no comment entered.

Was such a delay normal in Ireland?

For those who want to see the original on irishgenealogy.ie, look for a death of Madeline Proctor in 1957.
Looking at ALSTON in south Ribble area, ALSTEAD and DONBAVAND/DUNBABIN etc. everywhere, HOWCROFT and MARSH in Bolton and Westhoughton, PICKERING in the Whitehaven area.

Why not just post the Link to it instead of having people needing to search for it?

The image is at https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1957/04397/4144341.pdf

You may need to go through the various CAPCHA hassles.

A Death was supposed to be registered within a year.If that time was exceeded permission had /has to be obtained from the General Registrar by means of a Statutory Declaration. This is noted on the Certificate. There may have been practical reasons for the non registration e.g the Registrar attended the local village/ town about once a week at a specified time. This was often 3-4 mls.which in most cases had to be walked. So not really user friendly.Family owned cars were very scarce in 1950s .Public transport was spasmodic, depending where one lived.Another stipulation was the Cause of Death cert ,which was needed for Registration had /has to be signed by last doctor who attended deceased.Could be a problem in certain cases.Hope this helps.

Why is the registration lax  ???
It was registered, which is more than can be said of many deaths.
