Sarah Markwell (nee Balls) Stowmarket 1840- ????
« on: Monday 15 October 18 20:26 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone,

I've been trying to track down what happened to my 3x great-grandmother Sarah Markwell.

She was born Sarah Balls in Stowmarket and married to Benjamin Markwell in 1858, Stow Registration District.

The two had four children: George William, Mary Ellen, Sarah Jane, and Alice (there are possibly more), but her trail runs cold after the 1871 Census when the family are living on Bury Street Stowmarket (Benjamin an Iron Moulder).

In 1881 Benjamin is found living alone on Curriers Lane in Ipswich (error in transcription on Ancestry: Bengema Markewill?!), but listed as married.

He remarries in 1888 Elizabeth Nockolds, Woodbridge district, so I'm assuming Sarah must've died sometime before then...

Any help tracking her down would be very gratefully received!

Thanks all,

James :)

Thanks -

So, I'm descended through their first son George William (1859-1905).  He and his wife Emma (nee Hill) are resident in Ipswich for each consecutive decade following their marriage (in Colchester) in 1879.

On the marriage certificate, a Sarah Markwell is witness (assuming this was his mother), and his father Benjamin is stated as deceased (not true! he died in 1905...)

It is a bit weird... not sure what was going on with their temporary move to Colchester.  There also seems to be a link with Lowestoft (on the 1871 census two of George's sisters are stated as having been born there).

I'll check the Brighton connection.
