Derby - Litchurch Gas Works
« on: Tuesday 16 October 18 20:10 BST (UK) »
Greetings,

I have an 1895 death certificate for gg grandmother that indicates she died at Litchurch Gas Works, in Derby.  It is listed also as being the residence of the informant, who was her son-in-law (deceased daughter's).  I have tried to find information about the Gas Works to see what this could mean in terms of someone residing there. I don't find any information except for on the Gas Works itself.  Is anyone able to help me out, and explain how it could be listed as a residence?

Thanks in advance for your help
Cheryl  :)

This is a map of the gasworks around that time, I can’t see any obvious houses but it is a big works.

Any clues from the son in laws occupation, as gas works ran 24 hours a day you might expect some employees to live on site or very nearby for safety reasons.

Looking at the map again I wonder if there might be a gatehouse just by the only road entrance to the works, at the bottom where the road crosses the canal.
Just speculating

See the 1883 Town Plan at https://www.old-maps.co.uk/#/Map/436912/334922/13/100155 it looks like a house.

Hi Mike and Stan,

Thanks so much for the links, those are great maps. I agree with you Stan, where you placed the mark does look like a house.   I don't have much information on the son-in-law as I didn't order a marriage certificate, and have little information as they were sadly only married a year. I'm thinking the certificate might be a good idea, because if his occupation relates to gas works, as you suggested Mike, then that is very helpful.  Also, something twigged for me when you sent the map, and I could see the street names.  I will look for the Census for that area, and hopefully recognize another family name, or possibly his was misspelled.

You have given me something to work on here! I really appreciate your help!

Thank you
Cheryl  :D

As suggested by Mike, I have found that the son in law did work for the gas works. It makes more sense now that they could have lived there, especially based on the maps that were sent that indicate there could be houses on site.

Thank you again for your help Mike and Stan. Rootschat always comes through  :D
