first post search re father

Hi ,
My first post so any advice gratefully accepted. I wish to trace details of my father Francis j Herring Driver, Royal Field Artillery. Service number 208506.
Any details re his Corps, locations etc would be great. He was from Huntingdon if that may help discover which Corp he served in.
( I have pics of him on a horse - and in Egypt, so served there -  and I believe they went to Gallipoli ? )

The fact that you have his service number is very helpful and if you have his birth date that will also help.  You can obtain his service records for a fee of £30 from Glasgow.

If you visit the website below, it will tell you how to apply for them:-

They can take a while to come.  I obtained my late father-in-law's records this way.

Do you have his dates of birth & death? Do you have a scan of the picture you could upload [make it <500 mb]. I assume you have seen the medal award roll on ancestry....

It may be worth having the post transferred to the Armed Forces WW1 board. Quite a few very knowledgeable people there., although they may see your post here.

There are a couple of public trees on ancestry with Francis J Herring b Huntingdonshire 1899 , one maybe yours but you could contact the tree owner(s)& ask them what they know.

Your father's attestation record shows that he joined the army on 16 February 1917 and served in Italy 1918-19. He was discharged from the army on 15 February 1929. Note that his army number changed after the war to 1016528.

He served until 1929 so his records will still be with the Ministry of Defence, not National Archives.

He was transferred to Army reserve in 1920

Maybe you're right Lizzie. He's not on the FOI listings of soldiers born before 1901 whose records are still held by MoD.
