Joseph Thomas, Lower Bullingham.
« on: Thursday 18 October 18 21:17 BST (UK) »
Hi Everyone,

I have information in my family tree regarding the ancestry of Joseph Thomas who is my 3x great grandfather but this info is info i took down from another tree when I started family research 12 years ago. Now I can't seem to back up the info I have with parish records online. Wondering if anyone can help me locate Joseph Thomas.

Joseph died 25th December 1844 in Lower Bullingham, age given as 73. Occupation - Barge Builder. Which would place his estimated year of birth as 1771. However the info I have of his birth is this -

Joseph Thomas baptised 22 August 1778 in Lower Bullingham, to Michael Thomas & Eleanor Griffiths. But I am having trouble locating this baptismal record.

In 1841 his age is given as 60, which would give his birth year as 1781.

If anyone can help me find that record I would be grateful, though I realise that Joseph Thomas is a common name.

Thanks!

I can see a marriage for Michael Thomas and Eleanor Griffiths 23 Oct 1772, but in Fownhope, a few miles down river.

The baptism is a submitted entry on Familysearch, with no source cited.

Hi Mike

If the baptism is a submitted entry with no citation...would you say it is reliable?

I would not consider that a submitted entry without a source given as reliable.

I wold agree with Rosie, but I am struggling to find which church covered Lower Bullingham at that time.

Hereford archives has a gap in the records for Bullingham/Bullinghope for that time, the best suggestion is that they came under st martins church, but information is scarce and contradictory.

Edited to remove incorrect info.

In my tree, I have a baptism for Michael Thomas (Husband of Eleanor Griffiths) as 13th October 1745 in St Martins, and have the parents as Joseph Thomas 1709 - 1778 & Mary Phillips 1714 - 1778, but the parents for that Michael based on the baptism transcription, are William & Mary.

I feel all the info I have on the Thomas line is incorrect, or based on information I can't locate anymore.

Somehow I have these children for Michael & Eleanor -

Francis 1773, William 1774, Jane 1775, Michael 1776 - 1843, Joseph 1778 - 1844, Eleanor 1783, Elizabeth 1785, John 1786, Martha 1787, & Mary 1789. No Idea where they came from now, as I can't find records for them.  ??? ???

Joseph/Elizabeth do seem to name Children Michael John and Ellen so it does look possible his Parents were Michael/Eleanor.

So, what I know for certain.

My great great grandfather was John Thomas who was born Feb-Mar 1830 in Lower Bullingham to Joseph Thomas & Elizabeth Cooke. Elizabeth Cooke was from Callow in Herefordshire, I believe Joseph was born in Lower Bullingham.

The family in 1841 - Lower Bullingham

Joseph Thomas 60 (Carpenter)
Elizabeth Thomas 50
John Thomas 10
Elizabeth Thomas 5 (I don't know who this Elizabeth is)
Ellen Morris 20 (Milliner)
Edward Morris 10mos
Mary Morris 65
Harriet Morris 17

1851 - Lower Bullingham

Elizabeth Thomas 42 (Carpenters Widow)
John Thomas 21 (Joiner & Carpenter)
Elizabeth Thomas 15
Edward Morris 11 (Sunday Scholar)
Emanuel Hook 3
Diana Hook 24
John Hook 1

Joseph Thomas died 25 December 1844 in Lower Bullingam, aged 73. He was a Barge Builder, and his son John was present at the death.

Children I have found of Joseph Thomas & Elizabeth Cooke

Joseph Thomas. Baptism. 12 January 1809 St Martins, Hereford.
Elizabeth Thomas. Baptism 31 May 1812, ""
George Thomas. Baptism 6 January 1814 "" (unsure if he is a child of my Joseph & Elizabeth)
Michael John Thomas. Baptism 16 April 1815 ""
Ellen Thomas. Baptism 9 March 1817 ""
Mary Anne Thomas. Baptism 6 February 1820 ""
Amelia Thomas. Baptism 23 November 1821 "" (Mar. certificate lists father as Joseph/Gentleman)
Jemima Thomas. Baptism 1823 ""
Diana Thomas. Baptism 29 July 1827 ""
John Thomas. Baptism 7 March 1830 ""

Joseph Thomas & Elizabeth Cooke married 6th August 1807 in St Mary's, Callow.

So, Mazi....this is what I know for sure.
