There are RIC pension records on Ancestry which relate to James McIntyre. They record him as having qualified for a pension on 1st July 1861. The pension was £30 a year and was paid in Belfast. His last rank appears to have been acting sergeant. The date of death ties in with yours. His establishment number in the pension records was 6241. (Though that might be different to his service number. Not certain).

I looked for his service record but couldn’t find it. If no-one else is able to help, you could try the PSNI museum. They have access to RIC service records and will normally provide a copy upon payment of the appropriate fee.

I see a daughter Josephine was present at death - do you have any details for her?

Did she get married, is she on the 1901 census?

Aghadowey What do you make of this death address you found recorded for James
McIntyre or perhaps he only lived there for a few months

poor old Ward St is treated as unlisted then listed then unlisted  but I couldn’t find a James Mcintyre living in it.
PRONI street directories using
listed 1884 with nos 1-45 no McIntyre  No9 is James Graham, No 11 unoccupied {James is listed in matilda st}
listed 1887 with nos 1-45 no McIntyre  No 9 &11 unoccupied
named but unlisted 1890 several small houses also as found by Aghadowey {he has left 57 Matilda St}
listed 1892 with nos 1-47 no McIntyre no 9 is Patrick Fegan no 11 McDonnell
listed 1896 no 1 is Fagan no 9 is Heaney a lamplighter, no 11 is vacant

perhaps he was living with his daughter Josephine under her married name or Josephine is staying with a friend there.

Cwellan CoDown could this be daughter
Josephine   McIntyre   1853   father James   Down from [credits required] https://www.ancestryireland.com/family-records/birth-and-baptism-records-county-antrim-and-county-down/?search1=josephine&search2=mcIntyre&condition=begins&submit=Search
surprisingly a head constable’s daughter couldn’t write her name on the death certificate only I in 10 didn’t put their mark on the death registers page
ros davies has a line for James under knockbreda but also has
James   McINTYRE   .   Kilmegan   police constable in Castlewellan in 1846   POD
is this where James was promoted from to Belfast

hardsocks  did you find more RIC information?
