Clapperton McLean Learmonth
« on: Friday 19 October 18 19:36 BST (UK) »
Good Evening All,

I'm very new to genealogy but enjoying tracing my Learmonth line. I've had what seems like success through the paternal line, as most of the Learmonths were on Orkney and have found lots of information on Rousey Remembered etc.

Where I am getting stuck is through the McLean line. My Great Grandma was Annie Clapperton McLean b. 1893 in Penicuik and married William Learmonth b. 1894 Rousay.

Annie C McLean's father was William McLean who married Mary Clapperton. I am struggling going further back that William. On the different census's he his listed at son and grandson, so I guessed that maybe Ester McLean was Williams mother (illegitimate) and James & Rachel McLean are his Granparents.

Anyone researching the same line?

Many thanks, in advance,

Victoria

Hi and welcome to Rootschat

Downloading a copy of William & Mary’s marriage cert will show William’s parents names and mothers maiden name.  The marriage was 1884 Penicuik

Thanks @CaroleW!

I really hope I can contribute more than take!

I've had a look at Scotlands people and its not bringing up anything for William McLean or Mary Clapperton (ergh!!). Could I do be doing something wrong?

Hi Victoria

You are very likely correct! From Family Search index (original image on SP):

William Mclean
Birth Date    18 Nov 1859
Birthplace    PEEBLES,PEEBLES
Mother's Name    Esther Mclean

Given the age of grandparents John and Rachel McLean in 1861 (55 & 56) think you are the right track... ::)

However, just as an aside, seems Rachel did have a late birth in respect of her age. From 1861:

John Mclean 56 General Labourer b. Ireland
Rachel Mclean 55 b. Ireland
Esther Mclean 23 b. Ireland
Wm Mclean 14 b. Ireland
Archd Mclean 12 b. Peebles
Robert Mclean 6 b. Peebles
Alex Mclean 4 b. Peebles
William Mclean 1 b. Peebles

Address: Old Town North Side, Peebles

From Family Search index, this looks a good possibility for Alexander's birth:

Alexander Maclean
Birth Date    14 Oct 1855
Birthplace    PEEBLES,PEEBLES,SCOTLAND
Parents John Maclean and Rachel Macmomsoak

1855 was the first year of official Scottish registration. This one year, certs had extra info. For births, it should include date and place of parents' marriage. How many children they'd had: girls/boys & alive/deceased. It can also show place of birth of parents, may also include their age in 1855.

With Irish origins, anything you can find regarding their possible roots in Ireland is always a massive bonus.

Monica

ADDED: There are a number of online family trees which give Rachel's maiden name as McCormick/McCormack.
