Hi again,

Can you tell us when and where he died, and under which spelling of his surname, please?

Do you know the name of the vessel you mention?

What was his occupation?

If you can tell us what you already know, it will avoid us from going over old ground and wasting effort. And it provides a starting point to build on.

Janette,
his name was paul Freehill or frehill depending on how it was spelt. he was born on the 25/6/ 1935 in Ireland.the ship he was on came into queen charlotte sound on the 24th December 1957 till 4 January 1958.

Did the ship stay in Queen Charlotte sound for the 11 days? if so it seems unusal that he would travel to Auckland which in those days would probably be travel by rail including a three and a half hour (in todays ferries) Cook Strait crossing by ferry.Even today the train journey  from Wellington takes about 12 hours

Cheers Janette

janette,
the ship was the S.S. Oronsay it was an orient line cruise. in regards to the dates it was what my dad had written. so i don't know if the ship was in the port of Auckland for the length of time

Morning.

kiffagh has privately sent me a 186 KB small candid snap shot photo of a number of people.

Being that size does not allow for much magnification if looking to try and recognise faces.

I've taken the liberty of croping to the skyline, as it is not one I immediately recognise as Auckland. But then I have no real experience of the Auckland wharfs. It would have been easier to believe it was possibly Devenport, but the post states Merchant not Navy.

Photo taken to close to the ship to observe identifying characters, but posts since have named the ship it was believed to be.

Here is the manifest for the Oronsay leaving Sydney,Australia on the 16/11/1957

arrived in Auckland 17/12/1957

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HT-6589-XW7?i=12&wc=MP7L-92K%3A119035001%2C119041301%2C119134901&cc=1609792

List of passengers
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HT-6589-X6W?i=14&wc=MP7L-92K%3A119035001%2C119041301%2C119134901&cc=1609792

Looking at this passenger list it appears passengers from addresses all over NZ disembarked in Auckland

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HT-6589-X9N?i=5&wc=MP7L-92K%3A119035001%2C119041301%2C119134901&cc=1609792

Maybe the ship only cruised around Queen Charlotte Sound as the only port is Picton which is used by the interisland ferries and would be too small for liners

Cheers Janette

There was a Miss E Lowe who boarded in Vancouver and disembarked in Auckland, she gave her address as,392 Highgate,Dunedin

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HT-6589-X4S?i=21&wc=MP7L-92K%3A119035001%2C119041301%2C119134901&cc=1609792

Maybe her family came to Auckland to meet the ship?
