It's a possibility isn't it. Did she use her grandfather's name? Sometimes they don't know, it can be a false name if their mother wasn't married, it can be a step father's name. Sometimes it can be a mistake by the vicar.

My father in law made a mistake on my husband's birth cert. Mother in law married in her name ( her father died when she was 2) - but father in law, when asked for the birth cert., he gave her maiden name as her step father's surname. :o

On the census it's Walsh, on her marriage cert it's Welch, on the birth
cert it says her mother's maiden name was Welsh.
I'm guessing mum was not married as I can't find a marriage between
 a George Jones and a Catherine Walsh/Welsh/Welch.

If you want to hide the shame you invent a father.

You'll just have to accept what she's told the vicar or registrar, she had her reasons. You now know you've tracked her and you know who her children were, that's a result in my book - the father perhaps you also have that answer. That maybe something you won't be able to prove.

Don't you just love genealogy  ;D
