I'd feel a lot happier about that 1911 'possible' if I could find a marriage for Frederick and Elizabeth that might match

Do you have Frederick and Elizabeth's marriage? (registration or record)

I do think Elizabeth's maiden name was Wood, but don't have the marriage as yet.

"..Frederick's birthplace is given as Australia, which I can tell you is nonsense! He was born in Gloucestershire."

What are the origins of this Frederick BOULTON ~1872 Gloucester, and living at 67 Whitley St, and giving incorrect information about his birthplace?

Frederick was born in Lydney, Gloucs.
I have this from my grandfather years ago (who was George's son, Frederick's grandson).

Since you mention those cousins who were also on the 1901 census entry, they are incidental to my story. But when I traced them back, it seems that Gertrude was actually born in Oxfordshire from what I see.

They seem to have had a habit of telling porkies on census night in 1901  ::)

Frederick was born in Lydney, Gloucs.

Could Lydney, Gloucs have been miss-read as Sydney, Aus by the enumerator, then entered as just Australia.

If I understand correctly the enumerator delivered forms for the head of each household to complete and collected them later.  The information was then transcribed onto the census forms we see now.  The original schedules were then destroyed.
Robbins - Wolverhampton.
Spooner - Monmouthshire & Wolverhampton.
Warner & Loundes - Dudley/Smethwick.
Dod(g)son - Heysham/Liverpool/Wolverhampton

That's a genius theory! I never thought of that. :D
