By chance I have just found a newspaper article confirming this relative of mine was convicted of Bigamy on 19 July 1941 at Chester Crown Court.
He was born on 30 June 1904 possibly in Argentina. The earliest I can find him is being christened, aged 10, on 26 May 1915 at Balby, Doncaster, Yorkshire with his sister Gladys (1907 - 1995). I raise Argentina as a possible place of birth as his parents (Herbert and Hannah) married in Buenos Aires in 1899.
From the newspaper article I can glean:
- He is in the Army and is a Lance Corporal
When he joined up he said he was 27 when he was 35
He married his only legal wife in 1928 (name unknown).
He and his legal wife had 2 children
There was a legal separation 4 years into the marriage (so around 1932) that was rescinded the year after
There is suggestion that the second child of his 'legal' marriage was not his.
His second 'wife' was a lady by the name of D... E..... (blanked out on the off chance she is still alive but the marriage registration in 1941 gives her name)
Looking further into it the marriage to D took place in the Summer of 1941 in Chester, Cheshire and he seems to have been caught quickly. D apparently applied for Army Allowance and he was found out.
I am interested in trying to find out who his first wife was and when Percy/Peter died. To complicate matters he used an alias 'Peter' Scotter when he married D
Thanks
Ruth
