William Woodburn-Christian Ferguson (both born c1785-1790 in Ayrshire)
« on: Sunday 21 October 18 17:39 BST (UK) »
Looking for info on William Woodburn and Christian Ferguson, my 4th great grandparents, from Ayrshire. Possibly Galston. They were likely born between 1785 and the early 1790s.

They had at least 5 children:
1. Anne (b1812) m John Caldwell (these are my 3rd great grandparents)

2. Christian (b1813) m David Paton

3. Robert (b1815) m Mary Parker?

4. James Fairlie (b1820) m Jean/Jane?

5. Elizabeth (b1825) m David Paton (after her older sister died)

Any help is appreciated.  Thanks from Minnesota.

Welcome to RootsChat  :)

With their banns/marriage on 1 October 1808 in Loudoun, Ayr, you are very likely missing the details there of the early born children for them. Early names used for children can be useful and given clues to paternal and maternal grandparents' names (see Scottish naming pattern links such as here www.halmyre.abel.co.uk/Family/naming.htm).

Were William and Christian no longer living by the times of the censuses from 1841?

Added: See young Elizabeth aged 15 is living with sister Christian and David Paton in 1841.

What was father William's occupation on his children's registrations?

I can find all of the children you mention on SP except Anne and none earlier than 1812. Three of the baptisms are on Freereg, abode Holms, William a servant,

It looks like William is with son Robert in 1841 at Henrietta St Galston
William noted an Ag Lab born 1786. Christian is not present. William is not on 1851.

WOODBURN   WILLIAM   ALEXANDER WOODBURN/MARY CROZIER 13/8/1786   Loudoun
Plus 3 other possible on SP none in Galston and none matching naming pattern.

FERGUSSON   CHRISTIAN   DAVID FERGUSSON/JEAN ANDERSON    7/5/1786   New Cumnock
Only one on SP

Colin
Clarke, Trickett, Orton, Lawless, Norton, Detheridge, Kirby, Goodfellow, Wagstaff, Lowe, etc.

Monica and Colin, thank you for your quick responses.

I also have not been able to locate a birth record for Anne Woodburn. I was able to connect Anne to her parents William Woodburn and Christian Ferguson thanks to a family history written in 1905 by a descendant of one of Anne’s sisters. That family history names all of William and Christian’s children that can be found in SP’s records (except Anne of course). If there are other, earlier children, I don’t have any record of them. And unfortunately that family history does not go any further back than William and Christian.

I will pull down images of the records that are available to track down occupations and residence locations.

Hiya -
You haven't mentioned if you had found Ann &John Caldwell on Censuses.

The Caldwell family are living at Kilnknow , Galston on 1841 Census. All born in Ayrshire.
(Spellings are per Freecen)

John Caldwell    age 30 Coal Miner
Ann Caldwell     age 30
Willm Caldwell   age 12
John Caldwell    age 2
James Caldwell  age 3 months
Christina Caldwell age 8
Mary Caldwell     age 5

By 1851 Census the family are at 5 Henrietta Street, Galston  all with Galston as place of birth.
John Caldwell     age 39  Head   Coal Miner
Ann Caldwell      age 39   Wife    Flowerer *
Christina Caldwell   age 18 Dau    Cotton Clipper
Mary Caldwell      age 15    Dau    Cotton Clipper
Allen Caldwell      age 8      Son
Ann Caldwell        age 6     Dau
Robert Caldwell    age 2     Son

* A Flowerer would be a woman/girl who embroidered cloth  - I believe.
