Winwick Hospital Cemetery.
« on: Sunday 21 October 18 19:25 BST (UK) »

I found out last year that my Great Grandmother was buried in Winwick Hospital Cemetery which makes sense as she died in Winwick Hospital. I assumed that the cemetery would still be there even though the hospital isn’t. Last Christmas whilst visiting relatives we drove to where we thought it was but we could only find a school and houses. I have read a thread today on a forum and somebody said that some of the houses are built on the cemetery. Can anybody tell me if there is still a cemetery and if so where is it?

According to the site www.countyasylums.co.uk/winwick-warrington

"The hospital burial ground remains and is accessible and maintained although the last patient interment occurred in 1971."

My Great Grandmother died in 1980 so I am now confused.

Only quoting what I found. Perhaps it was the last patient from the Asylum who was buried in 1971.

Perhaps Lancs Record office can help or Warrington council.

Thank you. I am going to make some phone calls tomorrow to see if I can find out where she is buried.

The 1947 6-inch map shows the cemetery to the south west of the main buildings, rather than near the CofE and RC churches where I would normally expect.
    https://maps.nls.uk/view/101104016  (bottom right hand corner)
Google Earth shows a few monuments in that area, but it looks like most burials were unmarked.
Looking at ALSTON in south Ribble area, ALSTEAD and DONBAVAND/DUNBABIN etc. everywhere, HOWCROFT and MARSH in Bolton and Westhoughton, PICKERING in the Whitehaven area.
