A mystery?
« on: Monday 22 October 18 16:26 BST (UK) »
I would love to know why?  and as far as I can see I have gone down most avenues to find out.

Amy Ellen Scriven born 1879 Almondsbury Gloucestershire, parents Winchcomb and Elizabeth Scriven.

On the 17th June 1897 Amy marries Edward Alway in St Peter's Church Almondsbury. Sadly she becomes a widow in 1898 leaving her with a daughter Edith Maud Mary Alway born 1898.

On the 8th July 1900 Amy Alway marries Daniel W McCoy at St Lawrance Church Evesham. I have visited the Worcester record office and copied the marriage certificate. Amy says she is single and no name where the father's name should be. I did think that maybe there are 2 different Amy Alway's.

But again Amy is widowed this time in 1903, again leaving her with another daughter Ellen Elizabeth Ann McCoy born 1901.

Should of mentioned that first daughter Edith remains with her grandparents back in Almondsbury.

In 1907 Amy remarries this time to Joseph H Harrison in Medway Kent. Amy keeps her 2nd daughter Ellen and Joseph and Amy go on to have 4 more children living in Gillingham Kent.

On the 1907 marriage certificate Amy marries with the name of McCoy and her father Winchomb Scriven is on the certificate.

What happened with the 2nd marriage, what was she doing in Evesham let alone Medway later on guess it was though work

For some reason she must of fallen out with her parents, or maybe she never told Daniel that she was a widow with a child, maybe she was in service and told her employers she was single.

So may ideas, is there anyway I can research more?

Any help would be appreciated

Speculation number one ...

In service... became pregnant... married to legitimise daughter... failed to identify father out of fear of family shame... able to do so after death of parents??
Thomas, Davies, Jones, Walters, Daniel in Carmarthenshire and Ceredigion. That should narrow it down a bit!

diplodicus, so many reasons, only thought as the father's name was on the 3rd certificate would that mean he was still alive?  Must go and see when he died.

Maybe she remarried as single the second time so her future husband wouldn't think he would not  be encumbered with providing for her first child??

Hops and hop picking might be a possible link between Evesham and Kent.
