Mr F Brown must be Elizabeths sisters husband - her maiden name was Johnston without the e - I have not looked at her family yet.

Hi,

I found an obit for William Johnston in the Globe and Mail newspaper on 8 Oct 1974, page 50.   It says that he died at the York-Finch Hospital on 7 Oct 1974.  He was the husband of Lillian Varley of 369 East Street, Orillia.  In his 77th year.  Brother of Mrs Elizabeth Waine of Orillia.  Interment St. Andrews Cemetery Orillia.

Found an obit for Eldon's brother Thomas William Hopkins.  He died in Brampton on March 28 2013.  It says he was survived by his sister in law M* Hopkins.

Eldon's grave stone has her name, but not her dates.  I am wondering if M* may still be living.  If so, we shouldn't use her full name.

Also, there are WW1 records for a fitter named Alfred James Waine, born in Crewe, son of Alfred, and brother to William.... just in case it's your fellow. (available on pay sites... he served with a Cheshire regiment)

Elizabeth Johnston was d/o William Johnston and Elizabeth Johnson.  Both parents were born in Scotland.  William died in England as Elizabeth, 68, born Dumfries, Scotland emigrated with son Wiliam, 29, born Manchester, on the Montclare arriving 11 Jun 1927.  They were destined to daughter/sister Mrs. T not F. Brown of 28 Croham Road, Fairbanks, Toronto.  The other passenger list looked like Groham Road.    British contact was Mrs. J. Johnston of 2 Bayview Terrace, Mumble, Glam.  Another daughter/sister - should be Margaret born around 1898.

Elizabeth died 24 Sep 1930 Orillia.  Born 14 Aug 1863 Dumfries.  Son William of Toronto was informant.

Yes the "Ted from Colchester" is Alfred Edward a son born 29/08/1918 is born in Cholton from his first marriage - Alfred Edward died November 1999 Colchester, Essex aged 81 years so that fits in.

I often wondered if they kept in touch - it just seemed so odd that Alfred senior just left his son to be brought up by the grandparents, well mostly his grandfather as the grandmother died in the 1930s. Somewhere between 1918 and the early 1920s he goes to Manchester marries again and has 2 children and emigrates but leaves the first son behind.

Alfred James Waine b. 1894  married Edith B. Morgan 1917  in Crewe, Baptist Church (Union Street) and then his first son Alfred Edward born 29/08/1918 is born in Cholton but Edith Waine dies aged just 25 in 1919 (unsure yet if its childbirth related or even Spanish flu)

The grandfather died in 1950 and his grandson is his executor

Yes we found the service records for Alfred James Waine from findmypast and it is the correct person - he goes home to Henry Street which was the family home for about 50 years. We also think the older Alfred - Alfred James father who lived in Catherine Street also owned a house in Henry Street which was rented out.
His younger brother Frank also served in WW1 but we have not found records for him apart from his wedding certificate which said he was in the Lancashire Fusilliers and he gave his residence as a service hospital in Manchester so he was  wounded enough to be brought back and to have a very long hospital stay

I was very interested to read that Alfreds son served in WWW2 in the Canadian Infantry -  Private Colin W. WAINE - are records available or is there a way of finding them?
