Matilda Barton and Richard Smith
« on: Tuesday 23 October 18 11:51 BST (UK) »
Hi

Is anyone doing any research on Matilda Barton (born High Wycombe c. 1803-1808), married to Richard Smith (born Birmingham, c. 1800)?

According to census records and a Walsall trade directory, Richard was a shoe/bootmaker by occupation.

I have a marriage record from 1824 in High Wycombe for a couple of the same name.

I have full details for their children, one of whom was my great-grandmother Louisa Smith, and subsequent descendants, but if anyone has any information on Matilda and Richard's families that would be a huge help as I've hit a bit of a brick wall.

Thanks!

Thanks rosie;

Clementina married 1869 to John Goddard in Bucks.
Richard looks to have married 3 times;
1843 to Harriet White (she was buried Reading 18 Sep 1850 age 29)
1853 likely to Mary Ann Lee
1877 to Emily Tilling

I dint think Richard is the one Bapt 1 Oct 1800 Birmingham to RICHARD/ANN
They  seem to name another Son Richd 7 July 1808 Birmingham.

That would certainly stack up with the birthplace in the census records for 1841, 1851 and 1861 that I've found, although - as ever - the year of birth varies by about five years!

Interesting!!! i'd assumed, maybe wrongly, that the Richard baptised on 1 Oct 1800 was the right man.

I did wonder if Richard belonged to the Romany Smith family, as there is according to members of my father's family a gypsy ancestor.

As with Matilda, Richard's age varies from census to census up to 1861 but his birthplace and occupation are consistent.

I dint think Richard is the one Bapt 1 Oct 1800 Birmingham to RICHARD/ANN
