James WOODASON
« on: Tuesday 23 October 18 17:52 BST (UK) »
I am trying to locate the birth/baptism of James WOODASON. I would also be interested in tracking down prior to the 1881 census.

In 1881 he was working as a railway stoker and lodging with the Lane family in Sterndale Road, Battersea. A few years later, in 1885, he married the second eldest Lane daughter, Elizabeth Frances, at St George's in Battersea.

In 1881, 1891 and 1901, he gives his birthplace as Farnham, Surrey. In 1881 he was 26 indicating he was born in 1855, at his marriage in 1885 he was 29 indicating 1856, in 1891 he was 35 indicating 1856, in 1901 he was 48 indicating a slightly earlier date of 1853 and at his death in 1927 he was 76 indicating an even earlier 1851.

So all available information indicates a birth in Farnham, sometime between 1850 and 1858. The only other information I have about his early life is from his marriage certificate, where his father is named as Daniel Woodason, a shepherd. I have no idea about his mother.

Ideally I would like to locate (1) his birth registration, (2) his baptism, (3) his whereabouts in 1861 when he would have been about 6, and (4) his whereabouts in 1871 when he would have been about 16.

I should also state that I can't find him on the 1911 census, though the electoral register for that year suggests he was Sheepcote Lane, Battersea. So locating him on the 1911  census would be a fifth objective.

As always, any help greatly appreciated.

Have you tried Familysearch.org

Lots of Woodasons in Farnham, a few James, one gives his wife Elizabeth.  Worth taking a look I think.

There is a Daniel Poulter, a shepherd, living in Wansborough, Surrey in 1871 with a Daniel Wooderson as his 'son' although probably step-son realistically.

It is possible that James has got himself mixed up and maybe Daniel is his step father.  Will edit with the full entry  as its worth exploring :) as James may be illegitimate or from a previous marriage

The marriage between Daniel Poulter and Mary Ann Wooderson took place on 18 October 1857 at Crondall.

Her father was Charles Wooderson, a Labourer and his father George Poulter, also a Labourer.  Daniel was also a labourer!  ;D

She was single so I think we may be looking 2 illegitimate children - James and Daniel Jnr (at least)

If Daniel Jnrs age is right in 1871 he was born around 1855 so pre-wedding.  Now just  need to find the baptisms or 1861!! but as we now know Mum it might help... ;D

1851 Mary Ann is with her parents in Crondall

Might be a jump but there is a 9 year old James Wooderson with Charles Wooderson in 1861.

Mary's parents were Charles Wooderson and Sarah Ann Hoare and I can see the baptisms of all their kids bar this one called James and the two children either side of him on the census particularly (Samuel and Charlotte who are definitely Charles & Sarah's kids and they already have a son James born 1833 who is alive in 1851, 1861, 1871 etc).

He is in our right timeline.   I know its a stretch at the minute but could James be being passed off as Charles and Sarah's child rather than their grandchild?
