Bassingham, Lincoln blacksmith - lookup please
« on: Tuesday 23 October 18 19:37 BST (UK) »
Hi all
I'm currently sans PC and can't work out how to search Ancestry on my iPad, so I'm looking for a spot of help, please.
Simple search - I would just like to know ANYTHING about the blacksmith in Bassingham through the censuses.
There is a 'Forge Cottage' on Linga Lane which might be a bit of a clue.
Thanks in anticipation of any help which might be forthcoming.

:)

Wow, thanks so much.
If I'm honest, my interest lies in the 'Forge Cottage' property which is on Linga Lane.
There is a well in the grounds which I assumed was part of the smithy, but I could be wrong.
I've been told that the property used to be THREE cottages but that they have been knocked through into one, which is what usually happens.
I'm really just looking into who was there and when; the 'blacksmith route' was an educated guess. Or maybe not...

 ;D ;D

I think maybe not unless its quite recent....The Forge isn't showing up named through from 1851 to 1901 and Linga Lane seems to flit in and out of the census.  I was wondering if it came under another village, but there is no other possible than Bassingham.

Matthew Winn is still knocking around in 1911 but he doesn't name his house on his census entry

Fair enough.
I really wasn't expecting 'The Forge' to appear in censuses per se, hence my going down the 'blacksmith route', but if we can't link it to Linga Lane then it's a dead duck.
The frustrating thing is that you say LL flits in and out of the censuses.
It clearly has been there for decades but simply not recorded as such.
Maybe I need some old maps...

Is it number 6 Linga Lane, the one that is right at the end almost where the High Street meets Croft Lane?

Yes, I think that's where it is.
It's certainly number 6 now, labelled 'Forge Cottage' on street view.

I wonder (as it was a smallish village) if only that end of Linga Lane was inhabited if it got hooked up into one of the other streets on the census and has recently been renamed.

When it does appear in 1861 there is a George Holmes living in 'cottages' on 6 acres of land and a William Kenniwell who was a Groundskeeper but the properties either side don't help in determining where on Linga Lane they are

You may well be right.
I have no idea - I don't know the area at all.
I am simply curious to learn the history behind number 6.
As I said, no PC right now so having to beg.
