Long Addenham 1851: Haddenham 1861 - Location today
« on: Wednesday 24 October 18 07:27 BST (UK) »
My 4G grandmother, Sarah Higgins, nee Clark/e was born about 1784.

In 1851 her birth place is given as Long Addenham, Bucks; in 1861 it is given as Haddenham, Bucks. She was living in Kingsey, Bucks in 1841, 51 and 61 censuses.

I can find no appropriate baptism for her in Haddenham PRs, I wondered if there was a Long Addenham nearby at all?

Hoping someone with local knowledge will be able to help me out.

Try using a gazzeteer eg https://www.old-maps.co.uk/#/Gazetteer

or www.curiousfox.com has a "nearby" feature too.

Is the Haddenham in Cambridge the same physical place as the one in Bucks?

It's possible that she wasn't baptised at all, or that she was baptised into another religion.  :-\  Another possibility is that she wasn't born in Haddenham at all, but that is where she was brought up and she thought that was where she was born.  :-\

Thank you both for your replies. I realise she may not have been baptized at all, and may not have been born in Haddenham.

My real question is, Where is/was Long Addenham, if it was an actual place?

I have looked at a couple of old maps with no luck.

As for whether Haddenham Bucks was the same as Haddenham Cambs, I assume so, as they are so close together. I was wondering whether to put this on Cambridgeshire or Buckinghamshire forum.

The two towns are SEVENTY miles apart.

You've started a wild goose chase by all accounts

Isn't it more likely that "Addenham" was just another way of saying or writing "Haddenham" and/or perhaps the "Long" was the name of a farm or similar?  In any case other than looking at neighbouring parishes for a possible baptism, you may be out of luck.

Whoops! Apologies.  I was getting Oxfordshire muddled up with Cambridgeshire, don't know why (diminishing grey cells?).

I'll ask the good people on Buckinghamshire forum if they know anything.

I grew up in Haddenham, Cambs and my family have lived there since at least the 1600s. I'm pretty sure there is no Long Addenham nearby so you would be better off trying the Bucks forum.
