"Effective Bandsman"
« on: Wednesday 24 October 18 10:15 BST (UK) »
Assuming I have read this correctly, I would be grateful to have more information on this position.  The person in question enlisted at the age of 14 years and 4 months in 1892 for a period of 12 years.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

My belief is that effective here has a meaning similar to provisional or temporary.  I have seen the usage in the RN but not previously in the army.

His rank remained Boy until his 18th birthday, presumably 30 Oct 95, when he would become a Private.  He seems to have started training as a bandsman in August but didn't make it (unless his later record shows a continuation as a musician??).

Many thanks.  I think he may have continued to be an Effective Bandsman - there is a later entry for 24 December 1906, after he had re-enlisted after having completed his initial 12 years of service, as being appointed Effective Bandsman.  He went on to serve in WW1 and was awarded a Distinguished Conduct Medal in 1915 for his efforts in returning wounded soldiers from the battlefield.

Is there an appointment/promotion to Drummer somewhere between 1895 and May 1906 where it looks as if he reverts from Dr?

Looks like 27 September 1904 - after he re-enlisted.

Had to be there somewhere!

As a drummer he outranked the other private soldiers and was paid more. I'm pursuing the "effective" title elsewhere now my interest has been piqued!  Back in due course.

Oohhh, goody - glad I'm not the only nosy one  ;D  If you're interested, and have access, his records are on FindMyPast - John Christopher - Royal Berkshire.

A bit of a sad story - 1891 he is in the Workhouse in Portsea with his widowed mother.  Enlists in 1892 - mother dies late 1892.  He sees service in SA.  After re-enlistment he goes to India where he marries in 1908 (Karachi) and has a son in 1910 (Meerut).  He appears in WW1 and obtains his Distinguished Conduct Medal in 1915.

Just a thought, MaxD, if he became a "Drummer" what might he have been prior to this - as an Effective Bandsman?
