Margaret Ryan / John Bleach emigration to South Africa 1850 - 1865
« on: Wednesday 24 October 18 19:29 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

If anyone has access to passenger detailed passenger lists for South Africa, I would greatly appreciate any information on:

Margaret Ryan / John Bleach emigration to South Africa 1850 - 1865

also Jonathan Bennett in the same timeframe.

I have some indication that Margaret Ryan was born in Ireland (Waterford) in abt 1827 (death notice); she married John Bleach approx 1857, but not sure where.  He died in 1862, possibly Queenstown, South Africa (information from gravestone).

She married Jonathan Bennett approx 1865, presumably in Queenstown, and I have him as originating in Surrey or Sussex, England (death notice, hard to decipher) in 1827.

The reason for the biographical info on this board is ... they could have jointly or separately sailed from either England or Ireland.

I think that it is a strong possibility that Margaret Ryan and John Bleach arrived in South Africa as a married couple; but almost certain that Jonathan Bennett arrived as a bachelor, as I have found no trace of a first wife so far.

Regards,

Patricia

Marriage:

Dec 1851 Scarbro' 24 687
Bleach John to Margaret Ryan

I see no UK births for the surname combination, so they may have sailed soon after marriage.

Hi Jamjar,

Thanks so much for the info, I really appreciate it :-), at least it gets me one step further - this branch of the family tree has proved quite elusive over the years!

Patricia

Hi all,

Thanks for the assists, I've found some other info about how they could have got to South Africa thanks to another thread on the Irish board:

https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=802585

Bit of a puzzle for me to figure out, but I think they came on a troop carrier as it seems John Bleach was probably a private, and his wife came with him (apparently possible by lottery).

Marking this one as complete.

Regards,

Patricia
