Ontario: Richard BARNBY, born 1837, East Yorkshire

Hello,

According to the 1871 Census of Canada (District of Cardwell, Ontario) a Richard BARNBY born 1837 in England was enumerated.  Unfortunately, I am unable to access these details.

My research for this particular gentleman reveals only that he was imprisoned between 1852-1859, having been sentenced at Beverley, Yorkshire, on 19/10/1852.  I can find no other BMD details under that name, except the reference to Canada.

I wonder if someone can help please?

Hi,

In that census, he is with wife Margaret, age 26, b Ireland, daughter Jane age 3, and son Stephen
11 months both born Ontario.

Further up the page there is a Robert Barnby and family.

This seems to confirm the " Barmerley" marriage is correct.

This Richard Barnby appears to be on the 1851 and 1861 England census as a servant. It doesn't seem very likely that he would have gone to prison for 7 years and then found employment as a servant. Was your Richard actually transported ?

Two of the entries in the Criminal Records refer to Richard Barnby , alias Michael Dalton, aged 15 and a factory worker. His father is named as Edward Dalton of Blackbank (?) , near Ives Factory , Leeds.
A further record gives his alias as Michael Dillon.

Thank you for all the information........BARNBY, BARMBY, BAWBY etc. tends to be a little confusing in my dotage

However, first things first.    He was released from prison early on licence 29/11/1857 the Home Office having commuted his sentence to servitude from transportation but it was revoked on 04/12/1857 and he was returned to prison to complete the full 7 years.   The prison records are consistent in naming him BARNBY, whereas the Census returns offer BARMBY, although with the poor clerical facilities at the time the profile of him migrating to Canada, and being correctly called BARNBY in 1871, is very persuasive and which I am inclined to accept on the balance of probabilities.

Again thank you for all the information, for which I am extremely grateful in offering a possible solution.

PS:  I investigated the Michael DALTON/DILLON aspect and it appears to be something of a red herring
