I do have Florence's birth certificate (not just the transcript) and it says 4 females, 4 males and 1 female deceased ie 10 yet I now know that there were 11 children

Mabel born 1891 and died 1893 is probably the deceased female and Maud may have only lived briefly and not counted, though there is no death reg.  She was not baptised at St Matthias, as were the other children born between 1884 and 1895.

Debra  :)

Having read the concurrent thread on the English board in the search for George Francis/Richard SMITH and noting on the certificate of marriage provided by Debra, that the man's occupation was mariner,
I will add this as a thought.

People often named children after ships of arrival to  a new country.

Arriving Sydney March 29th 1873, the GLENCORA.
Departed Glasgow 4th December 1873.

Unfortunately I do not see the name George SMITH as a crew member and only one passenger is mentioned.

However, worth considering that George possibly arrived as crew rather than passenger on some ship or other from Scotland.

I was going by the death that says he was born in London. There are dozens of George Smith's born in Scotland for the given date's only 1 with the given names in reverse order...

SMITH, FRANCIS GEORGE. DAVID SMITH/MARY ROGERSON FR265 (FR265). 16/02/1840
853/A  20 23   Wamphrey.

There are quite a few mentions of the Glencora on Trove, that are not on the Mariners site.

He could have arrived on another ship and then signed on to the Glencora to do Australian coastal runs. Given the almost yearly births of his children, he wasn’t straying very far.

Also, as he married at age 30, there is always the chance he was married overseas, abandoned family, and gave false details on marriage cert here.  ;)

3. I walked Waverley cemetery for ages trying to find a headstone for George Francis that corresponded to the plot number given by the cemetery and I couldn't find it. I would be really keen to see the headstone you found.

Apologies if this has already been posted, but there is a photograph of the headstone here:

It does say that the older headstone (George's) is too weathered to read.
