Thomas Brown
« on: Friday 26 October 18 13:14 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

searching for Thomas Brown, born about 1847 in Belfast.
He married Emma Adsley (Adsley). She was born 1853 in Elham, Kent, England.
Would like to know if Thomas was indeed born about 1847 in Belfast and who his parents were.
Did he marry Emma in Ireland ? If yes when and where ?

They had at least one child: Thomas Adsley Brown, born 1875, Rochester, Kent England.

thank you

Thomas was born long before civil registration of births so it's a matter of searching for a possible baptism. However, not all church records for that period survive and of those that do not all are online. In addition, there are lots of churches in Belfast and vicinity of various denominations.

Registration of Catholic marriages started in 1864 (from 1845 for non-Catholic marriages) so if they married in Ireland there should be a record. However, since Emma was born in Kent and they lived there by 1875 it's probably more likely a marriage took place in England. If so, Thomas' father's name and occupation should be listed. Have you searched in England for their marriage yet?

Is this the family in Chatham in 1891? Thomas Brown born Ireland, Emma born Kent.
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QV7K-C3Z

Getting Smith for the mother's maiden name for the children born in England (possibly including Thomas Brown, Sep 1875, Medway)
Possible(!) marriage in the same quarter, Sep 75, Medway 2a 731, Thomas Brown + Sarah Emma Smith
Had Thomas senior been in the army?
Or is the wrong family? Need more info.

Dec 1900 Strood 2a 1122
Brown, Thomas Adsby
Wilson, Kate Eleanor

Free index to 1911. Thomas Brown, 36, born Rochester
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XWDX-24B

The marriage was at Higham, 26 Dec 1900
Thomas Adsley (not Adsby!) Brown, 28, bachelor, Gardener, father Joseph Brown, Bailiff
+
Kate Eleanor Wilson, 21, spinster, father Robert Wilson, Plate Layer
Residence for both Higham.
The Wilson family were out in force as witnesses.

So now I am totally confused.
Meanwhile, Thomas senior from Ireland, and Thomas junior still in Chatham in 1901 (all one family, but in two parts on FamilySearch)

and
